CONGESTION AT PORT OF SYDNEY & MELBOURNE
At this moment there is heavy congestion at the port of Sydney in Australia due to several reasons.
Empty container depots are full, bad weather, vessel schedule alterations and industrial action at Patrick Terminals have contributed to an increasing congestion over the last months.
There’s a similar bottleneck in Melbourne where container terminals are also congested.
Our Australian agent is indicating that they’re having major issues with empty depots in both Sydney and Melbourne being at full capacity and not accepting equipment and slots, which affects the inland transport costs (re-directions and staging of these empty containers at other depots).
Carriers as MSC and CMA CGM have announced emergency Port Congestion Surcharges for dry and reefer cargo to Sydney, effective as from this week (W38):
- CMA CGM : 285 USD per TEU as from 17th of Sept 2020 (prepaid)
- MSC : 300 USD per TEU as from 14th of Sept 2020 (prepaid)
